A Conservation Area was first designated on 11 July 1969 by Devon County Council. It was later extended on 3 October 1985 under Section 277 of the Town and Country Planning Act, 1971 (as amended by Section 1 of the Town and Country Amenities Act, 1974),

It was  further extended on 8 May 1992 under Sections 69 and 70 of the Planning (Listed Buildings & Conservation Areas) Act 1990 and extended again on 3 September 1992, under Section 70 of the Planning (Listed Buildings & Conservation Areas) Act 1990.

It was extended again on 8 February 2007 - The town of Totnes.
