A Conservation Area was first designated on 26 October 1976 under Section 277 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1971, (as amended by Section 1 of the Town and Country Amenities Act 1974).
It was later extended on 3 September 1992 under Sections 69 and 70 of the Planning (Listed Building and Conservation Areas) Act, 1990.
