A Conservation Area was first designated on 8 February 1974 by Devon County Council, it was later reduced in size on 3 October 1985 under Section 277 of the Town and Country Planning Act, 1971, (as amended by Section 1 of the Town and Country Amenities Act, 1974).
It was extended slightly on 24 February 1994 under Section 69 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act, 1990.
