A Conservation Area was first designated by Devon County Council on 14 September 1973, it was later partly reduced in size and partly extended on 3 October 1985 under Section 277 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1971, (as amended by Section 1 of the Town and Country Amenities Act 1974).
