Parking Permits

Use this guide to get information about the different parking permits available for South Hams District Council-run car parks. If you are looking for an on-street parking permit you will need to contact Devon County Council.

All our parking permits are now virtual. This means that you will not receive a paper permit to display in your car.

The exceptions to this are our Business Permits which are not virtual and will require a paper permit. If you are applying for a business permit, please put the name of your business in the vehicle registration (VRN) box.

Please note, we no longer offer weekly parking permits.

Our Parking Permit online system has changed as of 1 November 2024. Current Permit Portal Account Holders will need to reregister a new account on the new Permit Portal to continue to apply for permits from this date. 

Our Permit types and prices are unchanged.  Pre-existing permits purchased via the previous system will remain valid up to their expiry dates. Once a permit is nearing expiration you will need to reapply for your permits through the new permit portal.

General permit Terms and Conditions

Parking Permits for use in the Council’s car parks are issued subject to the following conditions:

1. Parking Permits may be used only in allocated car parks for that permit. Parking Permits may not be used in any other car park.
2. Purchase of a Parking Permit does not guarantee the right to a space in any particular car park.
3. Parking Permits are invalid if the vehicle is not taxed.
4. Parking Permits will only be issued for a specific vehicle registration, with the exception of Business permits which are transferable physical permits.
5. Please note that purchase of a Parking Permit does not entitle the bearer to the use of a RESERVED bay.
6. Please note that the following rules and regulations apply to all users of South Hams District Council car parks and are displayed on the notice boards:
   
   1. No caravans, trailers, lorries, motor homes, boats, nor any other vehicle in excess of 5 metres that does not fit in a marked bay .
   2. No overnight sleeping.
   3. Park wholly within marked bay only.
   4. Vehicles and their contents are parked at owners risk and the District Council will accept no liability for loss or damage to vehicles or contents.
7. Non-compliance with any of the above can be construed as fraudulent use of the parking permit and may result in the issue of a penalty charge of £70, the parking permit being withdrawn and no further parking permits being issued for two years from the date when the permit is withdrawn. During this period the situation will be monitored and any parking offences will be noted and used as evidence when considering future applications for a permit. 
8. We reserve the right to refuse any application for a Parking Permit.
9. Parking permits may not be sold onto or rented out to a third party by the Parking Permit Holder at the intended or increased price under any circumstances.
10. Permits are non-refundable.
11. We may by notice close any Parking Place or any Parking Bays temporarily - wherever possible, we will try to provide advance warning and allocate alternative parking to permits holders.
