Information for prospective candidates

Information for prospective candidates regarding the Devon County Council election being held on Thursday 1 May 2025.

If you are interested about the role of a councillor, find out what is involved and how to become a councillor on Devon County Council's website.

If you are interested in standing as a candidate at these elections, nomination packs will be available early March 2025.

If you wish to request a nomination pack for one of the South Hams divisions, please email elections@southhams.gov.uk stating your name and the division in which you wish to stand so that we can email a set of papers to you. If you would prefer them posted to you, please remember to include your address.

Nomination papers are also available from the Electoral Commission website alongside full guidance which covers every aspect of the election process.

The Notice of Election will be published on Tuesday 25 March. Nominations may be delivered during the hours of 10am and 4pm (Mon-Fri) on any day after the date of the notice (Wednesday 26 March). The deadline for delivery is 4pm on Wednesday 2 April. Nominations must be hand delivered by you, or by a person you trust to the Deputy Returning Officer, South Hams District Council Civic Entrance, Follaton House, Plymouth Road, Totnes, TQ9 5NE.

If you wish to make an appointment to deliver your nomination papers, please call 01803 861419 or send an email to elections@southhams.gov.uk. When you deliver your nomination papers we will offer you an informal check ahead of the formal submission. This allows for any mistakes or oversights to be picked up and will help to avoid your paper being rejected, but this may take up to half an hour at busy times so you will need to allow sufficient time if you wish to use this service.
