Council Tax Options

Tell us that you have moved home

If you are an owner or a tenant, you can tell us that you have either moved in, moved out or have moved from one address to another within the Council's area.

If you are a landlord or an agent please see landlord options further down the page.

Please do not complete this form for moves that will occur more than 30 days in the future.

    • I am moving into the area Link Tell us you are moving into South Hams from another area, or if you have moved from an address where you were not responsible for paying the Council Tax.
    • I am moving out of the area Link Tell us you are moving to another area outside of South Hams, or if you will not be responsible for Council Tax at your new address.
    • I am moving within the area Link Tell us you are moving from one South Hams address to another, if you were responsible for Council Tax at your old address and will be responsible for the Council Tax at your new address.
      Please note: If you paid by Direct Debit at the previous address, this is not automatically transferred. If you wish to pay by Direct Debit at the new address, you will need to complete a new Direct Debit form for the new account reference.

Pay by Direct Debit

Setting up a Direct Debit is the quickest, easiest and most popular way to pay your Council Tax. All you need to set this up is your Council Tax account number together with your bank account details.

You can choose to pay on the 1st, 15th or 28th of the month over 10 or 12 months. You can also choose to pay annually (on the 1st of June) or twice yearly (on the 1st June & 1st November). You may get fewer instalments if the Direct Debit is set up part way through the year.

You can access information on your Council Tax account, at your convenience any time of the day or night, 7 days a week without having to contact the Council.

Sign in to your Council Tax account to:

  • view your Council Tax bill
  • view your up to date account information
  • check your balance and payments
  • update your contact details
  • view your Housing Benefit payments

To register for access to the online service you will need to enter details as they are shown on your latest Council Tax bill or recovery notice. Please have one of these to hand before registering. When you register we will send you an activation email which you will need to accept before you can sign in.

Apply for or cancel a Council Tax Discount

You may be entitled to a reduction in your Council Tax if:

  • you are the only occupier aged over 18 in your property (Single Person Discount)
  • you and/or someone living in your property is a student or apprentice
Please note: If your application or cancellation of a discount results in the closing of your account and a new account reference being created, if you paid by Direct Debit on the previous account, this will not automatically be transferred. If you wish to pay by Direct Debit on the new account reference, you will need to complete a new Direct Debit form.
