If you are a business owner, you can find information about waste disposal and the council's commercial waste service on this page.

If you already have a commercial waste collection service from the council, you can order new sacks, report a missed collection or contact our waste team .

What are my responsibilities as a business owner?

As a business owner, you are legally responsible for making sure that your waste is handled and disposed of properly.

You must comply with government legislation which sets out how commercial or business waste should be:

  • Stored
  • Transported
  • Disposed of
  • Recorded

Remember, the provision for business waste removal is not included in your Business Rates. It is your responsibility to make arrangements for a registered waste carrier to collect and dispose of all your business waste.

The Council is a registered waste carrier and provides various commercial waste services.

We can provide a collection service for the following recycle materials:

  • Food
  • Paper/card
  • Plastic
  • Tins/cans
  • General waste - please recycle when possible.

There may be other materials you may wish to recycle; local recycling companies can be found online.

If you would like to find out more about our commercial waste collection service or get a quote, please use the "ask our team a question" form here

What else do I need to know?

Waste can be stored and collected in a variety of containers to meet your business needs.

Once collected it is transported to facilities where the materials are sorted and processed in to a reusable commodity.

The more you recycle, the more you can save.

Why should I recycle?

The Council actively promotes waste minimisation and encourages the reduction and re-use of materials where possible, prior to disposal.

Recycling commercial waste is more cost effective for your business and will contribute to sustaining the South Hams as a green environment for future generations.

If you are thinking about starting your own waste business or have concerns about whether you are disposing your own waste in the right way, you can contact the Environment Agency for more information on 08708 506 506 or email enquiries@environment-agency.gov.uk.
