A Conservation Area  was first designated on 15 February 1974 by Devon County Council.

It was later partly extended and partly reduced on 3 October 1985 under Section 277 of the Town and Country Planning Act, 1971 (as amended by Section 1 of the Town and Country Amenities Act, 1974),

It was extended again on 3 September 1992 under Sections 69 and 70 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990.

It was appraised and further extended on 3 September 2007 pursuant to the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990, Sections 69 and 70, Variation of Conservation Area Boundaries.
