A Conservation Area was first designated by Devon County Council on 12 January 1971, it was later extended on 3 October 1985 under Section 277 of the Town and Country Planning Act, 1971, (as amended by Section 1 of the Town and Country Amenities Act, 1974).
It was extended on 3 September 1992 under Sections 69 and 70 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act, 1990. It was extended again on 11 January 2013 under Sections 69 and 70 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act, 1990.
